Girl:
Good morning. Can I book a coach trip to Edinburgh?
Man:
Yes, there are two every day, morning and afternoon.
Girl:
Tomorrow morning, please. It’s my free day. How much is it?
Man:
It’s nine pounds for adults, five for children, and seven for students.
Girl:
That’s good. I’m at the university. Here’s the money and my student card.
Man:
Thanks. Here’s your ticket.
Girl:
Where can I catch the coach?
Man:
In Bridge Street or outside the Grand Hotel, or there’s a stop at the library if you want to wait there.
Girl:
Good idea, I’ll do that. What time does it leave?
Man:
It leaves Bridge Street at quarter to nine and gets to you at five to nine. It
takes ten minutes going through town.
Girl:
Is there time to see the castle in Edinburgh?
Man:
Yes, we go there after the cathedral. We don’t visit the shops or museums, I’m
afraid.
Girl:
Fine. How long is the trip?
Man:
The journey there and back is about two and a quarter hours and you spend two
hours in Edinburgh. So that four hours and fifteen minutes. You’ll be back by
lunchtime.
Girl:
Great!

Girl:
Hi Duncan. How was your tennis course at the weekend?
Duncan:
Well, I was actually there for five days, not two.
Girl:
Oh! Was the hotel nice?
Duncan:
Beautiful! We were high up in the mountains. We looked down on the lake, where
we swam every morning, and across to the town on the other side.
Girl:
Was the teacher good?
Duncan:
Excellent. He’s worked here in England for ages but he was born in Canada, so
he speaks French and English.
Girl:
I’d like to do the course. Was it very expensive?
Duncan:
Um, the full price in the summer is two hundred and sixty-five pounds, but it
only cost me two hundred and five pounds because I’m a student. In the autumn
it’s less – a hundred and eighty-five pounds.
Girl:
Hmm. Did you have to buy anything special?
Duncan:
I already had tennis clothes, and the hotel had racquets and balls, but I got
some new shoes because my old tennis ones were too small.
Girl:
What did you do in the evenings?
Duncan:
Sometimes we watched videos of tennis matches, but on the last night we danced
and sang songs in the hotel garden. That was great!

Jessica:
Hi Frank. Are you coming to the dance class at eight o’clock this evening?
Frank:
Hi Jessica. Yes, I finish work at half past seven, but I need to be home by
nine. How long is the class?
Jessica:
Oh don’t worry. The class is forty-five minutes long, not an hour. Some people
stay later to do half an hour extra exercises, but you don’t have to.
Frank:
OK. What do I need to bring?
Jessica:
Just wear comfortable sports clothes. You can leave your trainers at home,
because the teacher doesn’t want us to wear shoes. And bring lots to drink.
Frank:
I’m not very fit. Is that a problem?
Jessica:
No, there are people of all ages there and lots of them aren’t very fit. But
tell the teacher if you have never done dance classes before.
Frank:
Are the classes expensive?
Jessica:
The price has just changed from five
pounds to six pounds. It’s still a
good price, though, because other classes at the sports centre cost eight pounds.
Frank:
OK, shall I come to your house at half past seven?
Jessica:
I’m going straight from college. There’s
a café in the sports centre so let’s meet there.
Frank:
OK, see you later.

Suzy:
A new clothes shop opened in the town last week. I went there yesterday and I’m
going back again today!
Woman:
Do you mean the one near your college, Suzy?
Suzy:
That’s been there a long time, in fact they’re opening another one in the
shopping centre. The one I’m talking about is across the road from the
newsagent’s.
Woman:
What does it sell?
Suzy:
It sells shoes and boots as well as clothes. The only thing missing is bags!
Woman:
What time does it open?
Suzy:
It’s normally open from ten ‘til six, but it stays open until eight p.m. on a
Thursday.
Woman:
So, is it open every day of the week? I’d like to go on Tuesday.
Suzy:
That’s fine. The only day it’s closed at the moment is Monday, but it will open
every day if it’s popular enough.
Woman:
Oh, OK. I’m looking for some work. Do they need any staff?
Suzy:
Yes, they need shop assistants. The sign in the window says, if you are
interested, go in and talk to the manager. Don’t phone, because they’re very
busy.
Woman:
Oh great, I’ll just write that down. Thanks, Suzy.
