The TOEIC test (Test of
English for International Communication) looks to measure the general English
skills of a student who is working in an international atmosphere so I tried my
best to pick resources that will prepare you for TOEIC test.
1. TOEIC Official
Test-Preparation Guide: Test of English for International Communication
Educational Testing Service
Similar to TOEFL
Preparation Resources book, this is the official guide, created by the ETS
(Educational Testing Service). The reviews for this book are also similar. Most
students say it provides example questions that are the most similar to those
you will find on the actual TOEIC. This book gives you a large amount of
practice material, and excellent explanations for answers, for those who need a
little more help figuring out the more difficult questions. The only element
this book is lacking in is a good description of the test format.
2. 600 Essential Words
for the TOEIC: with Audio, 3 Edition
Updated to reflect the
most recent TOEIC, this test preparation book includes 50 vocabulary-building
lessons that focus on American English as it is used in business, industry,
communications, and cultural activities. All activities are like the actual
questions on the TOEIC exam and provide extra test practice. Examples of
practical English usage touch on such subjects as contracts, marketing,
banking, and personnel, among many other activities. Additional lessons are
focused to help TOEIC test takers expand their English vocabulary in areas
related to cultural activities, such as movies, music, and art. Each lesson
presents 12 target words with definitions, and then uses them in several
different contexts. Practice exercises follow every lesson, and a quiz follows
every five lessons to test students’ expanding skill in English word usage. The
enclosed audio CDs provide essential help in pronunciation and listening
comprehension.
3. Barron’s TOEIC with
MP3 CD, 6th Edition – Lin Lougheed
Created for English
language beginners, Barron’s TOEIC Test gives students a large amount of
learning material even with the cheaper price tag. Four full-length practice
tests are included in this book, and a CD can be purchased separately if more
practice is required. Some students reviewing the book have claimed to have
found mistakes in the answer key, which can obviously be frustrating and
confusing. Others have also said that the ‘listening’ element of the practice
tests are easy to understand and good for practice, however they are different
than what you will experience on the actual TOEIC.
4. Longman Preparation
Series for the New TOEIC Test Advanced 4th Edition
Longman Preparation
Series for the New TOEIC Test Advanced 4th Edition, gives students the skills,
strategy, practice, and confidence they need to increase their scores on the
new TOEIC Test. Ideal for a TOEIC test preparation course or for self-study,
the Advanced Course is intended for students who achieve TOEIC Test scores from
450 to 850. The book has 2 full TOEIC practice tests which are similar to real
TOEIC test. The book includes 6 CDs with 4 for preparation and 2 for practice.
5. Cracking the TOEIC
with Audio CD (Professional Test Preparation)
The Princeton Review
realizes that acing the TOEIC is very different from getting straight A’s in
school. We don’t try to teach you everything there is to know about
English–only what you’ll need to score higher on the exam. There’s a big
difference. In Cracking the TOEIC, we’ll teach you how to think like the test
writers and raise your score by making the most of your time and knowing what
to expect.
This book includes 2 full-length practice TOEIC exams, plus two audio CDs with listening exercises and a full transcript. The questions and exercises are like the ones you’ll see on the actual TOEIC.
